Communicate for ICDP Newsletter

In December 1999 Poland was admitted to the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP), after signing The Memorandum of Understanding by Prof. Aleksander Guterch (Association for Deep Geological Investigation of Poland - ADGIP) and Prof. Michal Szulczewski (Chairman of VII Section, P.A.S.) from the Polish side and Prof. Rolf Emmermann and Dr. B. Raiser from the GeoForschungsZentrum (Potsdam, F.R. Germany), on behalf of the members of ICDP. The  membership fee to ICDP was due to the State Committee for National Research (KBN).

Joining the in-group of China, Germany, Japan, Mexico, UNESCO and USA, Poland takes on responsibilities to be the active and creative partner in all scientific aspects related to ICDP. Many laboratories and scientists over the country are prepared well enough to carry research on drill core samples at the highest scientific level. Many of them will eventually have a chance to contribute to global scientific issues, breaking through local, sometimes unnecessarily universal, problems.

What we are facing now is to create the web of mutual contacts to organize groups of people interested in making successful research projects and carrying interrelated investigations of the core material. In order to do so, we have to ensure all volunteers to be well aware what is the current state-of-the-art in ICDP. This will not be easy enterprise, as the communication was never our strong point.

At the first step toward the better communication, the Scientific Board of ADGIP established a working group, consisted of people with different specialisations in the fields of the Earth sciences. The group has been meant as the operative body for exchange information between ICDP and research community in Poland. ADGIP has recommended the following persons:

Jan Golonka , DrMarek Jarosinski, Dr , Marek Lewandowski, Assoc. Prof. (the group co-ordinator), Stanisław Mazur, Dr , Stanislaw Skompski, Assoc. Prof. , Ewa Slaby, Assoc. Prof. , Andrzej Żelaźniewicz, Prof.

The second step in the same direction is making this WWW page, where, due to growing information, both history of Polish contribution to ICDP and current news will be presented and available through Internet.

The third step will be advertising through the mass media, beginning from the most relevant Polish monthly "Przeglad Geologiczny" (go to the top)

The forth step, as a consequence of the previous three, should be a national conference, followed by preparation of Polish research projects in response to calling-for-proposals from ICDP.

The fifth step will be a  project for deep drilling in our region of Europe. Making the project will be, beyond a doubt, a longlasting process involving hot  discussions. Taking advantage of authorship of this page I have my private proposition:

Why don't we drill a deep hole going through the Alpine, Variscan, ?Caledonian, down to ?Cadomian structures, situating the drilling site in the Central West Carpathians in the zone of the major geomagnetic induction anomaly and on the area where boundaries of Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland converge, thus making the project a common case for these countries? The seismic recognition after CELEBRATION 2000 project in this area should be excellent...

Updated 25.06.2003 and to be continued.....Marek Lewandowski.
